Textiles by Shilo Engelbrecht & Spacecraft
Hi there! Thanks for stopping by.
I created Threadbound in 2014 as a hobby project to enable me to further explore one of my great passions: textiles. I travelled throughout Asia and Europe for much of my twenties and was always drawn to the local textile and craft markets.
Traditional hand making skills and patterns caught my eye and made my heart sing. Since then, I have loved seeing how these same elements are applied in contemporary practice.
I was keen to know more about what was happening close to home. During the next four years I occasionally knocked on the door of my favourite Australia-based textile makers and found each one to be warm, welcoming and willing to share their craft. During this time, I was also inspired by the creatives and social entrepreneurs I crossed paths with in my role at Peppermint Magazine.
Eventually, the practice of research, interviews, writing and photography lead to freelance work for talented creatives such as textile artist Liz Sofield and fulfilling roles with Artisan and The Dharma Door - both heavily centred around the practice of textile making. So while I have been quiet here, I have still been filling the cup by sharing the stories of craftspeople and social enterprises who are bound by threads.
I hope you enjoy some of their stories.
